Mixing Prints: A Work Look Inspired by Mondo Guerra

On Project Runway 8, I was particularly drawn to the stylistic expressions of Mondo Guerra. He had an amazing ability to mix prints in a modern yet very polished way.

Today’s post is inspired by Mondo’s winning look in the Jackie O challenge. You remember, the outfit that paired a stripe top with a mod houndstooth print skirt.

Tee—Gap $13.65
Skirt—The Limited $31.07
Sash—Gap (Gifted in 2003)
Jacket—INC via Macy’s $29.99

Yeah he baffled me with that ability too. Hubs and I were always like "I never would have thught to put that together."

    Your interpretation looks great.

I love this outfit! The almost monochromatic use of color is fab. And that band of turquoise is just the perfect pop of color. I could wear this combo for work and not feel like i have gone too far because it is conservative enough but still unique.

Fantastic pattern mixing! Any tips on getting your sash to lay so perfectly?

I like how you used the sash to break it up, great idea.

Thanks for your kind words everyone!

@Kimberly: This sash was easier to work with because it is silk and the width was just right. I actually tried another one first, a purple scarf, which did not lay right at all. Also, I think anchoring the sash at the middle back helped to keep it flat as well.

That is SERIOUSLY fabulous. The small/thin aspect of each pattern works so well together that they don't clash, and the satin sash between them is inspired perfection. WOW.

Thanks @Kristen. When I saw the top with the mini stripe (and lots of white space), I had a feeling it would work well with the Limited skirt since the skirt has a more concentrated print.

I'm meeting Mondo Wednesday night in Denver for a Goodwill event. I'm going to "borrrow" your outfit for inspiration! Adorable.
