After the Missoni for Target collection fiasco, I decided not to take any chances with the Jason Wu collection. You see, Jason Wu is known for his “clean lines and smart details” according to Target, so this collection, more so than any other, matches my my style.
Shopping Jason Wu for Target:
1. Prior to the big release day today, I studied the collection previews (styles, price points, and so on) and decided that I wanted the poplin dress in navy. I also verified that my neighborhood Target would carry the collection.
2. At about 4 am this morning, I grabbed my iPhone while in bed to see if the line had released online. It did. I then checked to ensure that the dress I wanted would be available in store because some items never made it to the stores.
3. I headed to my neighborhood Target (Hampton store), a much less trafficked store than the Brentwood location, arriving at 7:45 am. There were only 5 people in line!
4. At about 7:55 am, a Target employee came outside to explain a few shopping rules. For example, we were only allowed to carry 2 sizes in a style at a time and one of each accessory per person. Doors opened promptly at 8 am. I headed straight to the poplin dress and grabbed a size 4 and size 6.
5. Next stop was the fitting room. The size 4 was too tight, but the 6 was about right. I grabbed a couple other things in store and headed to the register.

Other Observations:
There were very limited selections in most styles. In the poplin dress, there were only about 2 of each size available. There were about 25 people in line at my store at 8 am, and I’m certain that by the time we all left, there was nothing left.
A few local shoppers were disappointed that their preferred items weren’t in-store. Should’ve checked online first. But, Target was unreasonably quiet about important details like this prior to release day. Perhaps Target was directing all its energy into avoiding a site crash again?

Wear Now: Jason Wu for Target Poplin Dress
I headed to my store today and left empty handed. My store didn't have that dress (but looks really cute on you!)
Love the dress, and you hair looks fab, can't wait to see how you style it.
I've recently discovered your blog, and am really enjoying it and your great style. Thanks for the info on the Jason Wu/Target launch – I didn't hear anything about the details ahead of time, and am surprised that they decided to do it on a Sunday this time, and Superbowl Sunday at that. Perhaps they thought the crowds would be less that way?
That dress is so cute! I finally rolled out of bed and headed to Target (I live essentially next door to the hampton Target) at 9:30 and there were just a few things left and they were all not my style. I didn't really care that much, but I am heading to my parent's house tonight and am planning on stopping at two St. Charles county Targets on my way. 🙂 The St Charles targets always seem to be way less picked over than the city ones…
I happened upon the Wu release by accident. I tried on lots of stuff but everything was far to short for me. The poplin dress was mid-thigh on me. Not er ummm professional. :^)
@Fashion By Alicia: Aww no! That's too bad! I was determined to get that dress today. I still can't believe I stood in a line before the Target opened. I haven't done that kind of thing in ages.
@NothingOrdinaryStyle: Thanks! You are being too generous with that hair comment. I think I even had bed head still. LOL.
@Laura: Thank you. I'm so glad you stumbled into this space! I almost missed the launch too. Be sure to join me on Facebook or twitter, though, where I usually share news about events like today's release. I'm not quite sure what Target's strategy was. Perhaps the thinking was that more people could access the collection on the weekend as opposed to during the week.
@Ashley: Oh wow! I suspected that you lived in South City, too, because the backdrop of your outside photos look like this part of town. I live closer to the Gardens, so about 15 minutes away. But, yeah, we cleared that store out at the opening. Hope you had better luck at the other locations. I once tried the West County Target because I assumed the folks living over there could afford to buy the real designer collections. That store was empty too.
@Anonymous: No way!! A lot of folks wish they had your luck 🙂 The pieces are quite short indeed. I'm only 5'4" and the poplin dress is well above my knees. So, it would be quite short on a taller person.
Love that dress on you! Great pick from the collection!

Ooooh, lucky girl, scoring such a sweet dress from the Jason Wu collection! I didn't even bother going to Target after the Missoni disappointment.
In the post, you mentioned that you took a size 4 and a size 6 to the dressing room, size 6 fits better. What is your usual dress size? The reason that I am asking is just in case it pops back at the website, I can order.
@Mica & @Kristen: Thanks! I was determined to get this one especially after the Missoni drama.
@Anonymous: I usually wear a 4. I was also quite confident that the 4 would fit me since the skirt is full (I'm heaviest on the bottom and when I size up, it's usually to accommodate my hips). With this dress, though, I had difficulty zipping up the back of the top. Good luck finding it! I heard that Target has plans to restock some styles.
