ooh, and I see you’re a social scientist:
what do you think of so called ‘ethical consumerism’? e.g., fairtrade, boycotting companies: http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2008/mar/20/ethicalbusiness.retail?gusrc=rss&feed=networkfront
Lola: Thanks for coming by. I got your other comment letting me know that you did see the hair shot.
Thanks for that question on ethical consumerism. I do support the idea that consumers can make statements with their purchases to prompt social responsibility among companies. But, I more strongly support government intervention through the taxes and laws that can better regulate the market and ensure some ethical standards are met.
We’ve seen some consumer-driven successes as many companies are becoming more “ethical” to preserve their images. But, I do not trust the market to solve the world’s woes. Also, as a poverty researcher, I immediately think of people living in poverty. They are seemingly excluded from the movement to ethical buying (while it has become the mantra of the middle and upper class). Organic goods and fair-trade products are not always affordable.
I’m always intrigued by the comments from a psych expert!
Enc: Thanks for that. In other news, it probably would’ve been funny if I had studied psychology with my name, huh 🙂
