Light Fall Layers

We experienced our first fall chill in St. Louis last weekend. Not quite coat weather, I did some light layering to stay cozy and warm. My favorite pieces in my wardrobe are seasonless staples that can be styled all-year round. Yesterday, I reached for a few of those and threw them together to create a comfy fall outfit.

Today’s look started with the outfit I wore in the Fall Fashion Forward post. I kept most of the items in that look, added a long-sleeve shirt, and switched the shoes from pumps to oxfords. And, just like that, the ensemble was made appropriate for a colder day.

Oxfords are an easy choice for adding a lil hip flavor to fall looks. I’m quite fond of this Madewell pair because of its sleek and slim silhouette. The oxfords come laced, but can be worn laceless. I got them in my usual size 8, and they’ve been comfortable right out of the box.

I’ve gotten so much use out of the gingham button-down shirt I’m wearing. I purchased it on sale in J.Crew Factory last fall. It has a comfortably close fit that makes it perfect for layering. Remember how surprisingly well it paired with leopard? Shopping for one? Check out the new J.Crew Factory style and this J.Crew option.

Today’s images were taken at the Falstaff ghost sign in my neighborhood. I shot the earlier version of this look at the same location.

Favorite Fall Hues

One of my favorite things about fall style is simply the color palette. Rich and warm hues like berry, emerald, and mustard are among my favorite colors to wear this time year. So, when Boohoo asked me to join its #WeAreReady campaign by sharing one of my autumn must-haves, I immediately looked to my favorite fall color—berry.

I found the perfect fall skirt, a plain full circle midi skirt in the richest shade of berry. And, the best part? The skirt retails for only $20. It’s pull-on style with an elastic waist. The skirt was a tad longer than I prefer to wear a midi, so I’m wearing it with the waist folded over one time.

I’ve been keeping this H&M patterned scarf on hand to cover up when needed. Its colors and print blend right in with the monochrome berry ensemble.

My hair is pulled back and tossed to the side using a headwrap that adds a contrasting pop of color, hunter green to be precise, to the mix.

Sizing? I’m wearing a US size 6 in the skirt and a size small in the tank.

I found this ghost sign that’s barely legible in the Soulard area. One portion of the painted ad reads “Brown’s Five Star Mark,” which according to what I’ve read, indicates an affiliation with Brown Shoe Company, recently rebranded under the name Caleres.

End-of-Summer Deal: Safari Midi Dress

End-of-the-season sales can be so tempting. Many of the items that were popular for the summer are now at prices so low. The good thing is that lots of summer items can easily transition to fall, so some of the bargains might be great deals after all.

I purchased this safari midi dress, on sale for about $40 (orig. $98), because it’s a classic summer style I could wear next summer. Its earthy olive green color (quite popular for fall) and longer midi length make the dress wearable for fall as well.

Sizing? Loft is notorious for vanity sizing. This style, however, has a tiny waist,

so I needed a size small instead of the usual extra small I wear at this store.

I’m wearing the dress with one of my favorite pairs of pumps, the J.Crew Elsie fabric pump. Have you seen the Elsie circle lace pumps? I can’t wait for that pair to go on sale. By the way, as it gets cooler, I can replace the pumps with a pair of oxfords or ankle boots to create a hip look for fall.

Is it wrong that I’m considering getting the new J.Crew Fireburst bracelet? I’m telling myself that it might make sense to get a backup to the one I already own since this style is one of my favorites ever from J.Crew.

Today’s ghost sign, an amazing find right in my South City neighborhood, has a such a fascinating story. I met the owner of the building who was thrilled to share some of its history. The building apparently dates back to 1895, and Pattison’s Whiskey was in business between 1896 and 1898. An adjoining building went up around 1899 and had been completely covering this ghost sign until that building crumbled in 2011. The current owner has converted this former saloon and cafe into a residence. He was kind enough to let me shoot at his home.

Mad About Plaid

I have a strange relationship with plaid. In general, I’m not a fan. Occasionally, there’s a plaid print I encounter that I just adore. When I first saw the Venus plaid sweater cardigan, I was instantly attracted to it.

Print aside, this plaid sweater has such a sophisticated silhouette and options for wearing it. Today, I’m wearing the cardigan buttoned at the top, which creates a chic cowl neck. When worn unbuttoned, the sweater looks like a draped lapel coat. I just love it! I’m also a fan of its current sale price of $37 (orig. $49).

Sizing? I’m wearing the sweater in a size small.

The cardigan is definitely the spotlight of this look, so I kept my accessories minimal. I wore my House of Harlow studs instead of my usual drop earrings, so my earrings wouldn’t compete with the dramatic cowl neck.

I also wore a couple of my go-to rings, the Kendra Scott Branson ring and my Berry Brand cocktail ring. My cobalt pumps added a fresh pop of color to the black and grey ensemble.

I’m finding ghost signs everywhere in St. Louis. I spotted this one near a location I’ve photographed before. Remember that Columbia Iron Works building? This old painted ad is on the wall of a neighboring building. I can only read a few letters in the ad, so I’m still working on identifying it.

How to Wear: The Jess Oxford by Madewell

Oxfords are one of those trends that I’ve mostly shied away from. As a shorter woman, I gravitate towards shoes that are more leg-elongating, like pointed-toe pumps. I’m quite fond, however, of the overall hip vibe of oxfords. I’m also liking oxfords this time of year because they serve as a great transitional shoe; they’re the perfect style to wear between sandal season and boot season.

Oxfords are quite versatile and look good with almost everything. My favorite looks pair oxfords with shorter skirts and dresses, shorts, ankle pants, and leggings. I’ve been wearing my pair so much already. In addition to today’s look, these oxfords went really well with my Banana Republic belted romper (on sale).

Mixed metals! The J.Crew fireburst bracelet, one of my favorite pieces of jewelry, is back with a little twist. The re-released bracelet has blush beads at the tip of each gold matchstick. If you missed this statement piece last time, be sure to buy one early.

The black Jess oxford, now on sale, is a sleek and slim oxford that can be worn laced up or laceless. I’ve been wearing them laceless. By the way, I purchased the oxfords in my usual size 8, so the fit is true to size.

I found another striking ghost sign in my city, y’all. This one, Red Diamond, is weathered but still legible. From what I’ve read, the ad was for Red Diamond Overalls for men.
