It’s gotten very cold in St. Louis already, and I feel like I’ve been living in my coats. To make them feel fresh and stylish everyday, I’ve been relying on some of my favorite coat styling tricks. Here are my top 6 things to do to make an old coat feel new again.
1. Belt it
Belts have been back and better than ever in recent years. Simply adding a belt to an outfit can instantly make it more fashionable. Belting our coats has the same effect. Isn’t the Gucci Web Elastic belt a perfect complement to my red J.Crew Factory City Coat?
2. Skip the scarf
I love scarves, both for function and for fashion. But, sometimes, like when the neckline of your coat is fabulous, I skip the scarf to let the coat shine. This Talbots wool coat (also seen here) has a striking stand collar that holds its own. No stand collar on your coat? No problem. Wear a turtleneck sweater (as seen here) with your coat.
3. Cape it
When it’s not too cold, I always prefer to cape my coat. Caping makes any coat and the resulting look infinitely more chic.
4. Go Monochromatic
Can’t tell where my coat ends and my turtleneck begins? Yass, I was going for that! Seriously. though, wearing clothing in the same color (or color family) as your coat is always a good look.
5. Layer 2 Coats Together
The double coat trend has been making waves for some time now. I’m here for it because it offers new coat styling possibilities. Read more here for tips on avoiding bulk when rocking 2 coats.
6. Accessorize with pops of color
If we have to accessorize to stay warm, might as well have fun with it, right? Accessorize in color! These bright orange gloves add so much life to this coat.
