The Shirt Dress: A Summer Work Style Staple

A couple years ago, I taught a summer class for the first time in a while, so I had to fashion a summer work style.  Most of my sheaths, my typical teaching uniform, are too warm for the summer.  Besides, I wanted my summer look to be more casual, but still professional.

I discovered that teaching on sizzling hot summer days was much easier in a cool shirt dress.  My favorite one at that time was Gap's military-inspired shirt dress. It had such cool features like a drawstring waist and a sexy shirttail hem that I purchased it in three colors.

Since warmer days are here again, it's time for the shirt dresses to come on out.  My favorite khaki dress gets a spring 2012 update in today's post.  It's layered over a stripe tank and paired with bright accessories.

  3. Really like the shirt dress. I have been looking for a few of my own the ones I have found have been a little short for my taste but I am still on the hunt.

    1. Thanks! What's up with the short short skirts and dresses everywhere? I like the newer ones from the Gap, but a couple of them are short on me, and I'm only 5'4".

    1. Oh no, Kish. You know, this dress was tricky for me too. I usually can wear the smallest sizes in Gap dresses, but in this one, I bought size medium and it worked best.

  7. I'm so glad you posted this; Im teaching this summer and I'm thinking about my wardrobe and stressing. I don't like to wear casual to teach in, the building I'll be in can get pretty warm in the summertime....love the shirtdress idea! Although my legs are super white and I'm a bit self-conscious about showing them!

    1. Perfect timing, Lisa! I've seen a few very chic and longer shirt dresses in off-price stores like Marshalls and TJ Maxx. There's a a popular one by Evan Piccone that keeps appearing in Marshalls. Here's a photo from my "In the Field with EOS" album on Facebook. http://on.fb.me/IgT9ru .
